2022 February ASCM Central Indiana Newsletter
Message from ASCM Central Indiana Chapter Leadership
Can you believe it is February 2022 already? Well, if you forgot to start executing your certification maintenance plan for 2022, just think 2022 is 8% over now. Rembember, in order to keep your APICS certification valid, you must earn and submit 75 professional development maintenance points every five years (100 points for APICS Fellows). ASCM has recently changed their grace period for those certifications that lapse, so don't delay.
Maintenance can be fulfilled with many of the educational activities you are already doing to expand your supply chain knowledge and stay up to date on the latest supply chain trends. To learn more about the rules and policies relevant to maintaining your APICS certification, please read the APICS Certification Maintenance Handbook. The handbook can be found by clicking the link attached to this letter. Here are some of the ways you can earn maintenance points:
- Holding an APICS Chapter position such as governing board member or officer;
- Professional development meetings, webinars, workshops, seminars, and tours;
- ASCM Headquarters volunteer;
If you are interested in volunteering for our ASCM Central Indiana Chapter, please contact any board member for current opportunities. Finally, keep an eye out for upcoming events from our chapter.

What's New

Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled supply chain management has the potential to supercharge demand forecasting, revolutionize end-to-end transparency and boost integrated business planning. According to ASCM’s Research, Innovation and Strategy Committee (RISC) Sensing Subcommittee, AI and machine learning (ML) are among the 10 supply chain trends to watch in 2022.
Article of the month

As Omicron drives the high-speed spread of new COVID infections all across the globe, our pandemic fatigue is mounting yet again. Making matters worse, empty grocery aisles invoke unpleasant memories of 2020, dealing yet another psychological blow. During such trying times, it’s tough to stay positive and focused on finding solutions, but there’s zero doubt that the entire world is counting on supply chains right now.
Scarcity is all around us: Germany is facing massive supply chain disruptions, and the country’s chamber of commerce is especially concerned about the food industry. In Australia, container transport operators report as much as a 50% staff reduction of container crews, forklift operators, warehouse workers and heavy-vehicle drivers. Here in the United States, the grocery out-of-stock rate is at about 15%, as COVID outbreaks at farms, factories, distributors and retailers hinder product delivery. Vivek Sankaran, CEO of U.S. grocery giant Albertsons, says the retail chain is bracing for four-to-six more weeks of stockouts.
The empty shelves are the result of three main issues:
